Model 350, the cylindrical body with opposing handles and perforated rim with musical motifs?LITERATURE?c.f. Martin, Stephen A. Archibald Knox. London: Artmedia Press, 2008. Illustrated pg 210?From the Collection of Victor Arwas?London’s prestigious Liberty & Co, situated in famous Regent Street and still today one of the most fashionable retail stores in London, played a significant role in the development of British Art Nouveau. An inspired collaboration between the retailer and various leading designers was so successful that by the end of the 19th century, Art Nouveau was often referred to as Stile Liberty.?Following the success with fabrics and furniture for which Liberty is famed, Arthur Liberty looked to expand with an equally iconic range of metalware, and one of the designers he looked to was Archibald Knox (1864-1933). An influential designer and art teacher, Knox began designing for Liberty in 1897, and was a lead designer for the Cymric (pronounced KOOMRIC) range of handmade silverware which came onto the market in 1899, as well as the Tudric range of pewter ware synonymous with Liberty, produced from 1902. Known as ‘ghost designers’ because their names were never officially attributed to their designs, Knox is purported to have produced over four hundred designs for Liberty & Co.?In addition to metalwork and jewellery, he also designed carpets, wallpaper and fabrics, embracing the different design constraints of each with apparent ease. In 2006, the Archibald Knox Society was founded in recognition of Knox’s significant contribution to art and design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
