Note: The Pre-Columbian Valdivian culture was active in Ecquador c. 3500 BCE. These fired clay figures were produced at the main Valdivian site of Real Alto, roughly five hundred years after similar ones were made in stone. Without the accompanying body, it is unclear if these examples had a particular sex; although most examples are female, some figures have both male and female properties. These figures were found near hearths and food preparation areas, as well as in burial sights of important personages.
