Description Near East, Persia, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A finely-shaped bowl with a creamy white glaze and pretty manganese-colored motif of a fish in tondo, with decorative geometric motifs surrounding the fish. This plate was made at a time of demand for luxurious decorative ceramics, with the finest pieces going to the palaces of the elite. Throughout ancient Iran, many different kinds of ceramics were made, with some of the most specialized pieces being made by a single artisan or town's workshops. Many bowls of this style have been found in excellent condition in buried caches, thought to have been hidden in the face of oncoming Mongol invasions in the 13th century CE. Size: 8.2" W x 2.45" H (20.8 cm x 6.2 cm)
