Description Latin America, Mexico, Oaxaca, ca. 1970. Signed "Autor Manuel Jimenez, Angelico Jimenez, Isaias Jimenez". This lively wooden bear (oso in Spanish) was hand carved and hand painted by Manuel Jimenez Ramirez (Mexican, 1919-2005), a 20th century artist credited with originating the Oaxacan version of alebrijes, and family members Angelico and Isaias Jimenez. Alebrijes are in essence animal figures hand-carved from wood and then hand-painted with lively patterns in contrasting bold hues. This bear is a characteristically expressive alebrije - with a black spotted yellow head and body, black legs with grey toe nails, sky blue eyes, a pink mouth, and green spotted ears with orange interiors. One can find Jimenez' creations in both private collections and public institutions throughout the world. Size: 13.25" W x 11" H (33.7 cm x 27.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired prior to 1990
