A Rare Chinese Yuan Dynasty Underglazed Jar. This rare jar was made at one of the kilns at Yuxi county in Yunnan province, one of the first places in the world where blue & white ware was produced. The porcelaneous body is almost spherical in shape, topped with a wide flaring mouth. There are four loop handles luted to the body around the shoulder. On opposing sides of the body are two attractive spreading leaf patterns in underglaze blue that has fired to a very dark colour. There are two kiln scars to the glaze, not uncommon in "Yuxi" wares, where vessels were often touching each other in the kiln during firing. A good size with a height of 20 cm (8 inches). No repair or restoration. Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 – 1368).
Provenance: from the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.
