Fine Chinese Archaistic Rhinoceros horn libation cup? - 17th/18th Century, of conical lotus form on a slightly spreading foot, the openwork handle carved as two sinuous chilong with a third smaller chilong clambering up the side, each having finely carved bifurcated tails, a central band carved with taotie bats against a geometric fret ground over a series of hanging blades, a continuous key fret band to the rim, the horn of dark reddish brown tone, 7.5cm high, 11.5cm long. Provenance: The property of an English deceased estate, Henleaze, Bristol.? A similar example with chilong handle and key fret band to the rim, also dated circa 17th/18th Century, can be found in the collection of the British Museum (accession number SLMisc.143), bequeathed in 1753 by British physician and collector Sir Hans Sloane.? Pouring lip appears to be repolished. One chilong has a shallow surface split extending from the shoulder.? There is a shallow surface split to the taotie band beneath the pouring lip.? Either side of the lip are two faint surface fissures. There is a small shallow surface pinhole near the pouring lip. Minor nibbling to the rim edge, the edges of the taotie band and around the foot rim.
