The shape of this vase, as well as the bow-string bands and molded mask handles, are based on ancient bronze hu jars from the Han dynasty (206 BC – AD 220). A Daoguang-marked?blue and white hu-form vase of similar form and decoration was sold Sotheby's, New York, 28 May 1991, lot 273, and another, from the estate of Ambassador and Mrs. Walter Howe, was sold at Christie’s New York, 19 September 2007, lot 316.
