Skillfully fashioned in the round, this charming jade horse is sensitively rendered with gentle facial features and full rounded contours that pleasantly compliment its restful pose.
Animal carvings such as the present lot belong to a group of naturalistically rendered carvings attributed to the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Compare the carving and manner of a Yuan dynasty jade fish and lotus group in the Qing Court Collection illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures in the Palace Museum. Jadeware (II), Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 117. A pale green jade recumbent horse in a similar posture, attributed to the Jin-Yuan dynasty or later is illustrated in Jessia Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, pl. 26.15.
羅森,《Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing》,倫敦,1995年圖版26:15。
