Elegantly worked, this charming ram is indicative of Song dynasty jade carving styles. Compare Song dynasty jade deer carved in a similar fashion, such as two illustrated in Yang Boda, ed., Zhongguo yuqi quanji [The Complete Compilation of Chinese Jades], vol. 2, Shijiazhuang, 2005, pls 122 & 123; the first with a very similarly shaped face to the present carving, the second with a body like the present. See also another from the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware II, vol. 41, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 54.
See also a white jade ram with the head facing forward, attributed to the Song dynasty and from the collection of Brian McElney, exhibited in Chinese Jade Carving, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1983, cat. no. 142; and another, albeit more rounded, exhibited in Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1996, cat. no. 94. Compare also one attributed to the Song or Ming dynasty, sold at Christie's New York, 1st December 1988, lot 79.
