Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) used at least 30 different names during his carrier. This surimono is signed a??Sori Aratame Hokusai ga? at the upper right; a signature he used for only a short time, c. 1799. Surimono were limited edition prints commissioned for special occasions, but also included prints in books, some with comic poetry, known as kyoka. Kyoka books often featured writing by one or more poets, illustrated by well-known artists, such as Hokusai. This charming print depicts a child watching an amezaiku artist making blown and sculpted candy. During the Edo period, itinerate amezaiku artists often performed this craft, which attracted an audience of customers for the candy. Condition: poetry uncut and is somewhat soiled. Has one pinhole in robe.
