The vertically oriented, gilt-bronze panel casting in high relief depicting on one side eighteen Luohan in various posturing and positioning, some riding beasts and some holding precious objects, the other side featuring a panel casting of two sailboats on water with waves forming around the boat and crew members of each boat arranging in various positions, the screen mounting in a zitan frame with a meander design and set into a zitan support, dating from the Qianlong period. Dimensions are: the plaque measures 10 1/2 inches tall X 14 inches wide, 26.7 cm tall X 35.6 cm wide; the entire screen measures 17 1/2 inches tall X 17 1/4 inches wide, 44.5 cm tall X 36.2 cm wide. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Good with a few chips to the stand and minor wear to the gilt. Provenance: From the estate of Xiang Hanping. Xiang Hanping (1890-1978), a native of Hepu County, Guangdong, was a general in the Nationalist army as well as a member of the Kuomintang Central Supervisory Committee and a representative of the National Assembly of Guangdong. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he led the Nationalist army at the Battle of Songhu and Xuzhou. In May 1945, Xiang Hanping was re-elected to the Central Supervisory Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang. He served as the Deputy Director of Guangzhou Xingying and the Deputy Director of Guangzhou Appreciation Office. On July 27, 1946, Xiang Hanping officially retired. Aside from his military duties, General Xiang Hanping Suai read and practiced calligraphy, and devoted his life to writing, earning him the moniker of the "Confucian General" and "Half Student." In his spare time, the general often communicated with literati such as Hu Shi, Lin Yutang, Guo Moruo, Liang Shiqiu, and other famous writers. His published work "The First Collection of General Cursive Cursive Handwriting by Xianghan Ping" shook the literary world and was acclaimed both at home and abroad.
