Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944) was an English peer, sportsman, and founding member and first president of the National Sporting Club and Automobile Association. During his lifetime he was one of England's wealthiest men, and is well remembered for his bon vivant lifestyle. Due to his liberal spending habits, his estate was auctioned in 1947, and is considered the largest English Country house sale of the twentieth century.
