The fabrics were likely joined to be hung in a Buddhist temple setting, the luxurious fabrics originally received by the temple as donations from wealthy patrons. The cut velvet central element is a unusual survivor, given its large size. The inner kesi surround were likely taken from chair covers, and the blue ground embroidered border perhaps for a bed cover.
