Meiji period (1868-1912), each vase is finely painted with large reserves of decoration enclosed within a gilt ribbon with bow, the first painted in vivid detail with Fugen Bosatsu (Samantabhadra Bodhisattva) riding gracefully atop a white elephant and the second with Monju Bosatsu (Manjushri Bodhisattva) riding atop a ferocious lion, the reverse side of each vase painted with soldiers in lush landscape. 24.5 in.
