Soichiro Tomioka (Japanese, 1922-1994), Snow Countryoil on canvas, signed at lower left, framed. DOA 21.25 x 18.5 in. Soichiro Tomioka was born in Takada City, Niigata Prefecture. He studied art privately and first began exhibiting his work in 1953. Working predominantly in black and white, he developed his own paint, Tomioka White, to depict the snowy lands of Japan and other locales. Two large paintings of his were featured in The new Japanese painting and sculpture: an exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, 1966.
