Alfred Eisenstaedt (American/German, 1898a€“1995), Farewell of Servicemen, Penn Station, New York City, 1943gelatin silver print, 1943, printed later, ink signed and numbered 42/250 lower margin, sheet bears pencil inscription reading "Time Inc., All rights reserved" and title to verso, matted, unframed. Image Size 17 1/4 x 13 1/2 in.; Sheet Size 20 x 16 in. Hired as a staff photographer by the new LIFE Magazine in 1936, Alfred Eisenstaedt became one of the leading photojournalists of the 20th century. He took the iconic photograph for LIFE, V-Day in Times Square, which pictures a US Navy Sailor spontaneously kissing a stranger on the street - a dental assistant - in celebration of Victory over Japan Day. Using his small and unassuming 35mm camera, Eisenstaedt was able to capture many emotionally-charged wartime moments. Farewell of Servicemen offered here is a wider shot of family and other loved ones bidding farewell to World War II soldiers beneath the clock of the old Penn Station.
