style of Claude-Joseph Vernet (French, 1714-1789), Monumental Harbor Sceneoil on canvas (lined), circa 1800, unsigned, unframed. 85 x 113.5 in. Claude-Joseph Vernet was commissioned by Louis XV in 1766 to paint a series of twenty-four French seaports. After working on the project for nine years, Vernet completed only fifteen. These scenes proved exceptionally popular, with engravings and tapestries based on these views created for display in the homes of wealthy French families. Considering the impressive size of this painting, this may have been a tapestry cartoon.
