A Life Size Self Portrait of the Artist as a Dutchmanoil on cradled panel, inscribed and with artist's monogram at lower left "Pictor Pictorem Pingebat / 'alias' / 1883 AM / se ipse fecit," presented in a gilt frame and retaining a label from Max Granick, Inc. of New York. DOA 80 x 53.5 in. This full length self-portrait of the artist is an exceptional testament to the artist's skill. The presentation of the figure recalls an actor on a stage or an attendant at an elaborate fancy dress ball. The portrait is an interesting amalgam of the Dutch Golden Age style, with a decidedly "modern" look and scale favored by contemporary painters such as James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase and Alfred Stevens. From the Collection of the late Cary Lee Guy, MD, New York By descent to the late Virginia "Ginger" Pleasant, Angier, North Carolina Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.lelandlittle.com
