N.B. The charcoal portrait of Sir Hugh Allen was one of the last sittings undertaken by Sargent before his death in 1925. Sir Hugh Allen was a noted organ scholar at Christ's College, Cambridge and later held posts at Ely Cathedral and New College, Oxford. In 1907 he was appointed conductor of the Bach Choir in London, and in 1913 he shared the Leeds Festival with Sir Edward Elgar.
In 1918, Sir Hugh became director of the Royal College of Music in London. This portrait appeared as the frontispiece of the 1948 biography of Sir Hugh by Cyril Bailey
