BOXES TO THE LEFT, FAMILY TREE OF THE FAMILY OF CAREW OF BEDDINGTONJohn by the grace of God King of England, Lord of Ireland, Duke of Normandy and Aquitaine, Count of Anjou sends greeting to the his Counts, Barons, Justiciars, Viscounts and faithful subjects and with this charter of ours [confirm the gift] to William of Carew [of] the Manor of Moulsford with its appurtenances which King Henry grandfather of my father King Henry gave to Gerald son of Walter and grandfather of Odo father of the aforementioned William of Carew to be held by the same William and his heirs from us and our heirs for the service of this knight. Wherefore we wish and strongly instruct that the same William and his heirs have and hold from us and our heirs the aforementioned Manor of Moulsford with all its appurtenances well and in peace, freely and undisturbed and rightly as has been stated. Witnessed by: William de Gray our Chancellor, Holy Count of Winchester William Bruver, William of Cantilapo our Seneschal, William Archbishop of … Given by the hand of his Excellency Richard Marsh Archbishop of Northumbria in Westminster of the fifith day of May in the 14th year of our reign.Enquiry undertaken after the death of Adam of Montgomery in the 18th year of the reign of King Edward the First among other things says that the Adam died in lawful possession of the Manor of Lydon in the County of… His descendants… the arms of the said Adam, three black ancestral lions passant on an escutcheon of gold, by reason of the exceptional ancestry of the ancient family of Carew, which by the right of a female heir connected by matrimonial law to this Adam have been attributed and named de Carew to this very day as was the custom in past time in similar transfers of heirs to other families. This Nicholas of Carew is mentioned among The Counts and Barons of the Kingdom who [were] in Parliament in the Year of our Lord 1300 on the business of the Scots by the name of Nicholas of Carew Lord of Moulsford, an enquiry after his death undertaken in the fifith year of King Edward The Second, from whom the same Manor was held in socage, [says] that he died in lawful possession of this Manor of Moulsford in the County of Berkshire. John de Carew, the first of this name in the family, died in lawful possession of the same Manor of Moulsford, possessed from the King in socage, and further from the enquiry undertaken after his death in the seventeenth year of the reign of King Edward the Second his brother Thomas de Carew, his heir to the same place, is declared of the same blood on the grounds that his firstborn son Nicholas on the twentieth day of June in the same year [died] leaving no offspring. But the inheritance was clearly passed to John the younger of them because the same firstborn son Nicholas was never in lawful possession of it.
BOXES AT THE BOTTOMEnquiry undertaken in the thirteenth year of King Richard the Second after the death of Nicholas of Carew of Beddington among other things says that the same man died in lawful possession of the Manor of Beddington in the County of Surrey and the Manor of … with a third part of … and … , and was also the Manor of Great Parke in the County of Berkshire, and Nicholas of Carew is his son and heir. After the death of this Nicholas son of Nicholas of Beddington, which befell in the sixth year of King Edward the Fourth it is known by a similar enquiry that he died in lawful possession by fee-tail (jointly with his wife Margaret) of the Manor of Great Parley in the County of Berkshire and the Manor of Beddington in the County of Surrey and the Manor of Hyde. His son Nicholas had not survived beyond the third year of his life. This genealogy was taken from the genealogy of George Carew, Knight, who was a legate ordinary of King [James] in France. Written out in 1627
