William J. Potter was an American Impressionist landscape painter and also a teacher. Born in 1883 in Bellefonte, PA, he died in 1964 in Greenwich, CT. Other addresses of places he lived include Philadelphia, PA; Boston, MA; Colorado Springs, CO; and West Townsend, VT.
He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and with Walter Sickert in London. He was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and Salmagundi Club. He exhibited in numerous locations including the Pennsylvania Academy Annual in 1909, 1917-1922, 1927-1932; Salons of America in 1922; Corcoran Gallery Biennial in 1932 and 1937; Allied Artists of America in 1934; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
His work remains in several prominent museums including the Brooklyn Museum and Hispanic Museum in NYC,;the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY; Herron Art Institute; Sydney Australia Museum in Australia; Cincinnati Museum in Ohio; Expo Park Museum in Los Angeles, CA; Museum Rouen in France and the Museum Nacionale d'el Arte Modero in Madrid, Spain
