A hand-hammered sterling silver chalice produced by Lazarus Posen, circa 1920.
Lazarus Posen Witwe (Lazarus Posen's widow) was founded in Frankfurt on the Main in 1869 by Brendina Wetzlar, widow of silversmith Lazarus Jacob Posen. It carried the unique distinction of being owned ?and principally directed by a Jewish woman. The firm became one of the largest and most well-regarded supplies of Judaica in the late 19th and early 20th century, the quality of their silver earning them a royal warrant. Eventually owernship passed to Wetzlar's grandsons Jakob, Hermann, and Moritz Posen.
The firm remained until 1938, when it was looted and destroyed in the Kristallnacht. Surviving works are held in both the Frankfurt Historical Museum and the Frankfurt Jewish Museum.
