Oliver Wendell Holmes Lovely AQS from "The Chambered Nautilus"
A lovely autograph quotation signed by American poet Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809-1894) as "Oliver Wendell Holmes" at lower right. Written in Boston, Massachusetts on June 2, 1877. The left edge is deckled. Light overall toning. Minor edge darkening and a few stray marks mentioned just for accuracy, else near fine. 8.625" x 5.875."
Holmes has copied out the last stanza of his poem "The Chambered Nautilus," first published in the "Breakfast-Table" column of the February 1858 issue of "Atlantic Monthly."
With unchanged punctuation:
"Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last;Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by lifes unresting sea!"
Though Holmes, Sr. is best known as a poet, novelist, and essayist, he was also a doctor, medical reformer, trained lawyer, and inventor of the stereoscope. His "Breakfast-Table" series, a collection of essays set at a New England boarding house and published in book form in 1858, charmed his readers.
