Statement by Dr. ML King, Announcing the 1968 March on Washington 5pp, measuring 8.5" x 11", Atlanta, Georgia, dated December 4, 1967. A typed statement made by Dr. King, as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, detailing upcoming plans for the March on Washington and the goals they aimed to accomplish. An impassioned King writes, in part: "We will go there, we will demand to be heard, and we will stay until America responds If this means forcible repression of our movement, we will confront it, for we have done this before. If this means scorn or ridicule, we embrace it, for that is what America's poor now receive. If it means jail, we accept it willingly, for the millions of poor already are imprisoned by exploitation and discrimination. But we hope, with growing confidence, that our campaign in Washington will receive at first sympathetic understanding across our nation, followed by dramatic expansion of non-violent demonstrations in Washington and simultaneous protests elsewhere. In short, we will be petitioning our government for specific reforms, and we intend to build militant non-violent actions until that government moves against poverty..." King was assassinated before the march took place, and leadership fell to Ralph Abernaty. The Poor People's March on Washington, held in June 1968, would go on to draw approximately 3,000 people to protest and camp on the Washington Mall for six weeks. The typed statement has light creasing and warping at the center. Pages have been stapled together at the top left corner.
