Abraham Lincoln Signed Civil War-Dated Appointment Displayed with Rare EngravingAn elegant 1p appointment signed by 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) as "Abraham Lincoln" at lower right. Signed in Washington, D.C. on February 21, 1862. Countersigned by Edwin M. Stanton (1814-1869), U.S. Secretary of War, as "Edwin M Stanton" at lower center, and by U.S. Army Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas (1804-1875) as "L Thomas" in the docket section at upper left. Partly handwritten and partly printed on vellum. A blue embossed "War Department" seal is found at upper left. With two handsome martial vignettes at top and bottom. Expected wear including light folds. Fairly negligible damp-staining in isolated areas which does not distract from the overall beauty of the document, nor affects Lincoln's and Stanton's dark and extremely legible signatures. Else near fine. Ex-Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Sight size of the appointment: 13.5" x 17.5."The signed document is displayed to the right of a magnificent engraving of Lincoln by Buttre after Brady and Momberger, Ex-Swann Auctions. Overall toning and damp-staining, and laid down on board. The signed document and engraving are matted and archivally framed behind museum-quality UV ray filtering glass with document separators in a handsome rosewood finished frame. Not examined out of frame. Sight size of the engraving: 10.25" x 15.25." Overall size: 38.5" x 29.5" x 1.25." Accompanied by a signed James Spence Authentication Letter of Authenticity dated September 15, 2017, as well as by the Swann Auctions catalog listing for the engraving.President Lincoln appointed Richard P.H. Durkee "Captain in the Fourteenth Regiment of Infantry." Durkee, a New Yorker born in 1838,?enlisted in the army as a 1st lieutenant?on May 14, 1861 and mustered into the 14th Infantry Regiment. Within five months, he received?his first promotion to captain (October 25, 1861). He saw action at the Battles of Second Bull Run and Chancellorsville, and earned a second promotion to adjutant on September 13, 1863.
