The book has a superb inscription to Colonel James Martinus Schoonmaker,?a German American Colonel in the Union Army in the American Civil War and a vice-president of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad.
Andrew William Mellon, was an American banker, businessman, industrialist, philanthropist, art collector, and politician. From the wealthy Mellon family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he established a vast business empire before transitioning into politics. Mellon and Schoonmaker? knew each other via business connections, After the war, Schoonmaker engaged in multiple highly successful business ventures, leading him to own the coke business (which sold to the H.C. Frick Coke Company.), and then entered both banking and the railroad business.? In the banking business, Schoonmaker was vice-president and a director of the Union Trust Company of Pittsburgh, and a director of the Mellon National Bank, and Union Savings Bank.
