Miller’s letter to Johnny Vick, in full, “To date we have not received the copy of your song, ‘A Thing Called Beauty’. If you wish to send another, please do so and we shall be glad to look it over. However, I am frank to state that we never play unpublished works, and are mostly concerned with tunes that are currently popular in the states. / May I suggest, if you have not already done so, that you submit your song to a New York or London publisher?”
Glenn Miller (1904 – disappeared 1944) was an American big band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was the bestselling recording artist from 1939 to 1942, leading one of the most popular big bands. In 1942, Miller volunteered to join the U.S. military to entertain troops during World War II, ending up with the U.S. Army Air Forces. On December 15, 1944, while flying to Paris, Miller's aircraft disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
