New England and New York Sermons and Patriotic Orations from the Early National Period This collection of pamphlets includes sermons and patriotic orations delivered on various occasions between 1801 and 1820, including Independence Day celebrations, days of thanksgiving, ordinations, and election days. Several were delivered before Washington Benevolent Societies, political clubs set up by the Federalist Party between 1808 and 1816. He graduated in 1768, received a Master’s degree in 1771, and was admitted to the bar in 1775. He represented New York in the Continental Congress and signed the Articles of Confederation. He moved to Philadelphia in 1779, and continued work as a lawyer and merchant. He represented Pennsylvania in the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where he contributed significantly to the new Constitution, including authoring the preamble. From 1792 to 1794, he was the U.S. Minister to France. He returned to the United States in 1798, and served in the U.S. Senate from 1800 to 1803 as a Federalist. ?
