The Corps had some action day before yesterday and yesterday, in the last of which the enemy was badly beaten & driven off. We got many prisoners. The action of yesterday took place before I got up. Day before yesterday six out of seven of the officers of my regiment were wounded. I am now the only officer of my regiment present with it. My kindest regards to all your family."

Stone is famous for his involvement at the Battle of Ball's Bluff in October 1861. He was accused of treason for the Union failure there, and was arrested and imprisoned for almost six months, mostly for political reasons. He never received a trial, and after his release he did not hold a significant command during the war again. After the war, Stone served as a general in the Egyptian Army, and was engineer in chief for the construction of the base of the Statue of Liberty.?
Letter has flattened mail folds and light foxing throughout. Paper remnants at the top edge, possibly from where the letter had been previously mounted. As stated above, the image of Stone has been clipped and mounted on card stock. Light scratching and wear to image, but still clear.
