"Portland August 28 1875
Dear Sir:
I intend to reach Washington Friday October 8th in the afternoon preparatory to taking my seat on the Supreme Court on Monday Oct 11. I hope you will have our room in good order. Mr Charles we ought to have a new chandelier and I think the mirror should be repaired and the plastering overhead.
Respects to all Yours Truly
Nathan Clifford."
Clifford served on the U.S. Supreme Court between 1858-1881. His pro-Southern, pro-state's rights policies complicated the Court's decisions in the years immediately before, during, and after the Civil War.
