Description George II Rococo sterling sauceboat by Charles Federick Kandler. London, 1743. Griffon shaped handled surmounted on a shell form body rising on a pedestal base decorated with repousse flowers. Repousse body is decorated with laurel swags of flowers and chased foliate and shell designs. Two panels adorn each side with Chinoiserie scenes of a house astride a tree and a Chinese gatehouse astride a moon bridge. Marked on bottom with English hallmarks and partial strike of Charles Kandler's Post-1739 JK surmounted by a fleur de lis mark. 7 3/4" x 9" x 4 7/8". Approximately: 27.27 ozt. Condition: Wear consistent with use and age. Provenance: Three pieces by Charles Frederick Kandler are part of the Irwin Untermyer Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Two pieces, a brazier and sauceboat, are listed in the "Highlights of the Untermyer Collection of English and Continental Decorative Arts" published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1977 and currently available online. The sauceboat (accession number: 1974.28.181) is remarkable similar to the piece being listed. It has the same griffon handle and overall profile. A close relative of J.J. Kaendler, the master modeler for Meissen, Charles Kandler's work has been described to incorporate elements from Meissen porcelain and imitate painted porcelain.
