The inscriptions bear the studio name of Huang Ren (1683-1768), an early-Qing dynasty scholar and poet, who was known for his collection of ink stones. The reverse of the Chengni ink stone is incised with a figure of Bodhidharma, follower by an inscription signed Wu Changshuo.
