In 1921, a famine in the Volga egion of Soviet ussia theatened the lives of millions of peasants, and stoies of cannibalism and othe hoos ciculated in the West, pompting Kollwitz to make this lithogaph. Gaunt cheeks and sunken eyes give an emaciated man a skeletal appeaance, while hands cicle aound him offeing help. Kollwitz gives the tagedy a human face and uges he compatiots to lend thei suppot.
This poste was published as pat of the elief effots of the Intenationale Abeitehilfe (Intenational Woke's Aid), a Communist-backed oganization founded in August 1921 as a esponse to Vladimi Lenin's call fo help fom the intenational poletaiat. Some vesions came with the exhotation "Helft ussland" (Help ussia) witten nea the top. Kollwitz's image ciculated widely in Euope and the United States.
