A large blue and white brush pot depicting a scenery of scholars in a garden. Dirtied by years of neglect. Dimensions: 14.5cm height, 18.7 cm diameter. Notes: It is important to note that Qing dynasty ceramics depicting people are always Ming Dynasty people. This is distinguished by their attire, and as the people depicted on this brushpot, the seated scholar is wearing a hat with "wings", whereas Qing scholars and officials had a queue hairstyle. The mark suggests that this brushpot was made during the middle period of Kangxi's reign, as the characters are more loose and freely written. Blue used to paint Kangxi period ceramics are also one type of blue, and through the expertise of the kiln masters, they were able to create different shades using one blue material. Provenance: Property of a Hong Kong collector from 1941, thence by descent.
