Description A WOMAN KIMONO
Japan, first half of the 20th century
Purple ground, the decoration consisting of polychrome square reserves with figures and calligraphic texts.
Provenance: Italian private collection.
The lively decoration on this kimono is inspired by the Hyakunin isshu, a collection of poems compiled in the Kamakura era by Hujiwara no Teika (1162-1241). It consists of one hundred poems created by as many authors. This anthology stimulated several traditional games of cards and shells. It is rather rare as a decoration of traditional clothes.
