an antique, southeast Asian , Khmer, stone carving of Buddha Muchalinda.
Angkor period, 11-13 cent.
This , amazing, rare and complete Buddha Muchalinda is a beautiful example of Khmer ingenuity and craftsmanship. The Buddha is seated in the lotus posture. His hands held together in a meditating mudra . Serene contemplating expression, with down cast eyes. He is placed on the Naga ( a mythical snake dragon with 7 heads), were the heads of the naga protect him from the elements. The Buddha is wearing a tiara, heavy earrings rest on his shoulders, a broad necklace around his neck and 2 arm bands. It is carved out of buff lite brown red Sandstone. Probably from mount Kulen area. there are losses to the nozzle of the main Naga head. There some losses and wear due to age, as expected, and some discoloring.
This fantastic item come from an old collection that was bought in the 90s.
