well-cast with a bulbous mid-section between a spreading foot and a trumpet neck with wide flaring rim, decorated with two taotie masks and two pairs of confronting dragons on a leiwen ground between two double 'bowstrings', 23.2cm high
Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London, 2002
Note: The inscription to the interior of this vessel consists of a clan sign followed by fu yi. This is a dedication which means 'dedicate this vessel to' Fu Yi (Father Yi).
Distinctive for its wide mouth to facilitate the pouring of wine, this particular example belongs to a very small group of bronzes which are decorated with two repeating ‘bowstring’ bands around its body. The body is exceptionally well-cast with a striking design of two taotie masks and is covered in an appealing malachite-green patina. A similar vessel from Shaanxi Provincial Museum is illustrated in Western Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, Jessica Rawson, VOL. IIB, The Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, Washington, D.C., 1990, P. 555, Fig. 81.1. TPlease refer to department for condition report
