The scene, depicted in the relief on the vase corpus, is based on a Roman fresco from Augustinian times known as the \"Aldobrandinian Wedding\". The fresco, named after its first owners, was rediscovered around 1601 during the construction of a house near the church of San Giuliano in Rome and has since been in the possession of the princes Aldobrandini. In 1818 it was purchased by the Vatican and installed at the \"Sala di Sansone\", now \"Sala delle Nozze Aldobrandine\", at the Apostolic Library. Since its rediscovery, the fresco has had a great appeal to both artists and scholars, and has also been the object of art historical research. Especially since the 18th century, in the course of the increasing interest in the \"Grand Tour\", the popularity of the fresco grew due to the publication of numerous copperplate prints. The fresco played a significant role in the development of the classicistic style. The fresco served also as a model for several copies, such as a painting by Johann Heinrich Meyer in Goethe's house at the Frauenplan in Weimar, which was created after they had travelled together in Italy in 1795/96. Following the spirit of the time, the Berlin porcelain manufactory took up the popular topic as well and realized it on this vase.
