1750-1850年 芝亭作瑪瑙「獻壽桃」紋鼻煙壺For the subject of a monkey holding peach on another agate bottle attributed to the Official School, see Moss, Graham, Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol. 2, Pat 2, Quartz, pp.350-353, no.310. Monkeys were one of the most popular subjects for bottles of the Official School. The Tang Dynasty Emperor Taizong is said to have recognized the services of the monkey known as Sun Wukong by posthumously designationg him 'Great Sage, equal to Heaven'. Legend has it that this monkey helped the Emperor's emissary, the monk Xuanzhuang, to obtain from India copies of the sacred books of Buddhism. The epic story was published as Xiyou ji (Journey to the West) in 1592, complete with fanciful tales of the monkey's theft of the Peaches of Immortality from the gardens of Xiwangmu, the Daoist Queen Mother of the West, thus associating the monkey with immortality as well as mischief.
