1800-1900年 瑪瑙巧雕蝴蝶紋鼻煙壺For another example of a butterfly bottle, see Bonhams, Snuff Bottles from the Mary and George Bloch Collection, Part 1, 28 May 2010, lot 40.The butterfly is a very auspicious motif for happiness and longevity. Two facing butterflies, hudie can be read as a joyful encounter and symbolizes marital happiness. A bottle such as this would have made an ideal wedding gift. The first character hu is pronounced fu in some Chinese dialects which is homophonous with the words for blessings and happiness. The second character die, is a pun for the word meaning "age seventy to eighty" and for the verb "to accumulate" as in an accumulation of blessings, see Bartholomew, Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art, p.32, no 1.3.
