The elephant symbolises wisdom, and the word for elephant, xiang, is a homophone for the word 'aspects' or 'signs'. The word for wash, xi, is a homophone for the word for happiness. Washing an elephant therefore forms the rebus xixiang, signs of happiness, representing the cleaning away of dirt and the renewal of good luck, xixiang geng xin.For another jade example of larger size, see Christie's, New York, The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, 21 March 2019, lot 1174
