A small lacquered wood suzuribakoEdo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th centuryOf rounded rectangular form with a slightly domed cover decorated in iro-e takamaki-e with a continuous design of a stalk of bamboo and a fruiting vine with seeds strewn on the ground next to the foot prints of a bird, the underside of the cover with a continuation of the footprints, the ground undecorated to highlight the natural grain of the wood, the interior fitted with a square inkstone and a shakudo water dropper formed as a lotus leaf, set into a gilt saucer, inscribed on the underside of the cover Zeshin in gold lacquer 8 1/4 x 6 x 1 3/4in (20.5 x 15 x 4.5cm)
