The first by Gyokuzan, the second by HododaMeiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, 19th/ 20th centuryEach painted in polychrome enamels and gilt on a clear, crackled ground, the first with a scalloped rim decorated overall with shaped panels containing samurai, court nobles, beauties and children, and Buddhist ascetics, the surrounding areas painted with geometric and floral designs, signed on the underside in gilt Satsuma Gyokuzan ga, and with the mark of the Shimazu family; the second with a squared rim and applied with a figure on one corner, the interior decorated with 12 Buddhist ascetics and attendants, the rim with a band of tasseled garlands, the exterior painted with panels of ascetics, samurai, beauties, and court nobles, all framed by geometric designs, signed on the underside in gilt Satsuma Hododa, and with the mark of the Shimazu family 5 3/8in (13.5cm) diameter; 4 3/8in (11.1cm) wide
