Mandarin Ducks and Lotus Flowers has a simple structure, featuring the lotuses drawn with the freehand technique of Xu Wei and Zhu Da. The stems bend downward in an unnatural way, making his works unique. The leaves were coloured in a mixture of dense and splashed ink. Gradients of ink could be observed. The bud was sketched in a round shape, and was coloured in red, creating a refreshing design. Dry ink was used for the rocks. A pair of mandarin ducks gazed at each other. Their bodies were sketched with ink. The male duck has green feathers on its head and back, while the feathers on the tail are coloured in red. The female duck was dyed in light ochre near the eyes and on its wings in minimal strokes. An inscribed note says it was to be given to a couple friends with a blessing.
