Description Bust of a young Chinese man with a long braid. Patinated Bronze and white marble on a moulded red marble base. On a tall black-and-white marble square section pedestal. “Le Chinois” is one of Carpeaux's most important works. It exists in two versions. The sketchy version of 1868 and the more naturalistic version of 1872, all rendered in three different materials: marble, bronze or terracotta. A bronze version was cast in a posthumus edition with signature, stamp and pastille. Busts in the combination of bronze and marble are so far unknown.
