This carved ivory carving depicts a child kneeling on all fours on top of a pumpkin. The figure sits on an ebonised wooden base with four curved feet. In Chinese culture, the pumpkin is a symbol of prosperity, abundance and descendant’s luck, so with a child on top this may represent a long and prosperous life for the child, or given to a couple may promote illustrious children.
