Extrêmement rare écran en bois d'agar sculpté, chenxiangmu
'Le Cabinet Fragrant'
Profondément sculpté en haut relief de dragons à cinq griffes pourchassant la perle sacrée parmi les nuées, il comprend en face avant un miroir circulaire en partie centrale, une tête de dragon centrale vient orner la partie supérieure et est agrémentée de part et d'autre de deux ?illetons. L’utilisateur peut, en s'approchant, y apercevoir deux scènes, l'une un paysage extérieur et la seconde une scène d'intérieur comprenant du mobilier et des personnages de la cour. Chacune des deux scènes est formée par la superposition de différents plans vus en succession grace à un ingénieux jeu de miroir.
Au revers, une rangée de huit tiroirs en partie centrale dont la face avant est possiblement en bois de Zitan. De part et d'autre de cette colonne, les différents plans sont alignés et en partie supérieure un fixé sous verre orné de dragons à l'or sur fond noir dissimule le système de miroir permettant d'entrevoir la scène complète par chacun des oeilletons.
Le bois d'agar appelé aussi bois d'aloès, calambac en fran?ais et chenxiangmu (沉香木) en chinois, est une résine dont la production est particulièrement lente. Ses propriétés odorantes en font une matière extrêmement prisée comme bois d'encens, il est aussi très recherché en médecine asiatique pour ses vertus supposées guérissantes. Ce matériau rare servit aussi à la production d'objets de lettrés dont l'odeur agréable, mais aussi le type de bois immune aux agressions extérieures de termites ou autres parasites confère à ce type d'objets une valeur particulièrement élevée. Il fut cependant très peu commun qu'il soit utilisé pour produire du mobilier d'une dimension si imposante.
La production étant faible, le gabarit des morceaux recueillis est en règle générale assez faible, les objets faits de Chenxiangmu sont donc très souvent faits à partir d'un assemblage de plusieurs éléments (tel est le cas pour le présent écran).
Plus qu'un simple écran de table à proprement parler, tel que celui présenté par Sotheby's Paris le 12 décembre 2017 (lot 64), nous sommes ici en présence de l'essence même de l'objet impérial chinois de l'époque Qianlong. En effet, les motifs de sculpture représentant des dragons sont d'une qualité irréprochable et parfaitement équivalente aux objets de forme impériaux classiques en bois de zitan. De plus, le système de périscope et le jeu de miroir permettant la vue d'une scène par juxtaposition de différents éléments décorés est un système qui fut développé au travers des échanges culturels entre la Chine et l'occident. Ces échanges ont été favorisés par la présence de moines Jésuites ayant oeuvré à la cour impériale sous la dynastie Qing durant le 18e siècle, à l'image des jeux d'eau de la fontaine du palais d'été comprenant un système hydraulique innovant.

Collection privée (Chateau du Sud Ouest de la France). De tradition familiale, aurait été rapporté en France par leur ascendant collatéral G.D. engagé dans les troupes d'infanterie coloniale en Cochinchine et en Chine entre 1903 et 1919.

'The Fragrant Cabinet'
CHINA, XVIIIth century.
An extremely rare carved agarwood screen.
Carved profoundly in high relief with five claws dragons chasing the sacred pearl among the clouds, this screen includes a circular mirror in the central part on the front, a head of the dragon adorns the upper part and is decorated on the two sides by eyecups. When approaching, the user can see two scenes, the first one is the exterior landscape and the second one is the interior one with the furniture and the people in the royal court. Each of the two scenes is formed by the superposition of different views seen in succession thanks to this ingenious mirror game.
On the back, there are a row of eight drawers in the central part of this screen, which the front side could be the red sandalwood (zitan). On either side of the column, the different planes are aligned. In the upper part, a fixed glass embellished with gold dragons on a black background conceals the mirror system, allowing us to have a glimpse of the complete scene through the two eyecups.
Agarwood is called calambac in french and chenxiangmu (沉香木) in chinese, it is a resin which has a particularly slow production time. Its fragrant properties make it into an extremely popular material as incense wood. It is also highly sought after in Asian medicine for its supposed healing properties. This rare material was also used in the production of literati objects not only for its pleasant smell, but also for the immune function to external attacks from termites or the other parasites, which gives this type of object a particularly high value. However, it was very unusual for it to be used to produce furniture of such an imposing dimension. As the production of this wood is low, the size of the pieces collected is generally quite small, the objects made from chenxiangmu are therefore very often made from an assembly of several elements (such is the case for this screen).
It is more than just a simple table screen that we are talking about, such as the one presented by Sotheby's Paris on December 12, 2017 (lot 64), we are here in the presence of the very essence of the Chinese imperial object of the Qianlong dynasty. Indeed, the carving patterns representing dragons are of an irreproachable quality and perfectly equivalent to the classic imperial shaped objects in zitan wood. In addition, the periscope system and the mirror game allowing the view of a scene by juxtaposition of different decorated elements is a system that was developed through the cultural exchanges between China and the West. These exchanges were encouraged by the presence of Jesuit monks who worked at the imperial court under the Qing dynasty during the 18th century, like also the water games of the fountain of summer palace, including an innovative hydraulic system.

Private collection (Castle is the South West of France). By family repute, was brought to France by their ancestor G.D. while serving in the Colonial Infantry Regiment in Cochinchina and China between 1903 and 1919.

中國 十八世紀 沉香木雕龍紋鏡櫃
本品正面深浮雕五爪龍穿雲戲珠，中部嵌一面圓形鏡，上方有龍頭裝飾與一對目鏡。觀者可以通過目鏡看到兩幅場景，風景圖與室內宮廷人物圖。兩幅場景透過潛望鏡成像原理，藉由後方格版疊加呈現出景深。
背部中間設八抽屜，屜板可能為紫檀木。上方一對玻璃飾有描金龍紋，作為鏡像反射系統。沉香木因其生產速度緩慢，自古即為稀有木種。此木種與生俱來的淡雅香氣，使其格外珍貴。除此之外，此櫃所使用的西洋成像原理，更是中國與西方文化及工藝交流與融合的最佳證明。
