An English sculpted and carved terracotta corbel head, in Medieval style, probably 19th century, modelled with stylised facial features and wearing a cap, 30cm high, 18cm wide, 19cm protuberance
The incised almond-shaped eyes and finer underlying modelling of the cheekbones and facial structure are similar to 14th- and 15th century examples found in Norfolk and Suffolk, in particular the unpainted head stops at All Saints Church, Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire. Though less fine in execution, another similar example with regard to size, style and material is a fragmentary corbel head at the Buckinghamshire County Museum, which was reputedly found in Aylesbury (accession number AYBCM : 1991.55.1) and which is also dated to the 14th or 15th century
