This pair of pictures once hung in Lanwades Hall, Newmarket, and likely to be the property of Durham Matthews. Lanwades was built by James Lanarch whose horse Jeddah, won the 1898 Derby, at 100/1. Lanarch
built the hall for his daughter but she loathed it and never lived there, although Edward VII stayed there when racing in Newmarket. Lanarch died in 1919 and the house was bought by Sheffield cutlery magnate Major Durham Matthews. In 1945 when his only son died in the War, Matthews sold the house and land to Wooldridge, leaving behind some of the family paintings. There are inscribed family dog graves beyond the sunken garden.
