Description John Rutledge (1739-1800) signed legal document as appearing for the Defense Jan. 21st. 1772. Rutledge was a member of the Continental Congress, then President of South Carolina 1776-1778, then the first SC governor after the Declaration of Independence, 1779-1782. He was appointed to the US Supreme Court under George Washington and served 1790-1791 before he left to become Chief Justice of the SC Court of Common Pleas. In 1795, he returned to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice as a recess appointment. When the Senate rejected his regular appointment, he retired from public life.
